Marathon, FL - True leadership skills combined with a clever use of the latest environmentally friendly technology
helped the newly designed and constructed Boy Scouts of
America National SeaBase achieve significant energy
cost reductions.

The high-adventure training facility hosts over 5,000 scouts yearly
for week long sailing retreats. Providing hot water for showers, kitchen,
and clean-up without creating sky-high unmanageable energy costs or
unnecessary pollution became a real challenge.

In the face of skyrocketing energy costs and
a down turn in the U.S. economy, project engineers
were determined to reduce daily operating expenses as
low as possible, while at the same time protecting
their environmental integrity.

Located in the Florida Keys, an area vulnerable to large scale power
outages and strict environmental laws, the architects designed the
massive seven unit facility to incorporate solar energy in reducing the
staggering costs of water heating.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Effective for use in residential, commercial, and
industrial water heating applications, solar was chosen
because of its reputation for reliable operation and
cost effective performance.
Solar was also chosen because of its durability.
Panels passed the test during Hurricane Hugo, which had
sustained winds of 180 mph and gusts in excess
of 230 mph.
